Many of us consciously purchase products which we believe will make a difference and help protect the environment, we scrutinize labels for harmful ingredients and environmental pollutants and we are more careful about what we put into our mouths and onto our skin. But how many of us consider that most sensitive of places and the feminine hygiene products we use each month? We know that you don’t expect to have to deal with Crude oil plastics, chlorine bleach, toxic dioxin residual and plastic synthetics and with Natracare products you don’t have to.

For 21 years, natracare, the World’s most sustainable and ethical brand of tampons pads and liners has provided women with a quality choice of organic and natural feminine hygiene. No Greenwashing, no confusing messages, just truthful claims based on fact, not spin. Owned, developed and designed by a woman, natracare is passionate about truth in labeling and they are ethically evaluated.

Natracare have a complete range of twenty four high quality products that perform, including certified organic 100% cotton tampons with and without applicators, Ultra slim and Maxi pads in various absorbencies, four styles of organic cotton panty liners; light incontinence pads; New Mother nursing and maternity pads and organic cotton Intimate wipes and Baby wipes which are of course free from SLS, propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol and parabens.

Natracare produced in 1989 the first 100% cotton tampons available to women since the 1940’s and in 1994 were the subject of independent scientific research which subsequently concluded that in order to avoid the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome, 100% cotton tampons were a safer option than rayon and rayon/cotton blends. 15 years ago when organic was not fashionable, natracare made their tampons exclusively with certified organic cotton.

Natracare’s impact was to make the feminine hygiene business a more ethical, healthy, environmentally friendly place. They started a small revolution that has since developed into a big change in the industry, with copycat products starting to appear after precedence was set by natracare’s global market positioning. Natracare still maintains absolute integrity in their products, gaining both ecological and ethical awards for the brand, and the company, unmatched by any other feminine hygiene manufacturer or brand.

Natracare is the world’s leading organic and natural, ethical and Planet-friendly feminine hygiene brand, making it possible for you to make a healthier choice from their range of certified organic and natural cotton tampons, pads, liners and wipes. Of course they use sustainable and renewable materials that you can compost at the end of use leaving a very soft footprint on Mother Earth, just as it should be.

Their products are suitable for vegans and never tested on animals. To learn more please visit their website www.natracare.com.

Vitamin D research is shining a light on how to prevent serious health conditions.

Vitamin D-also known as the sunshine vitamin- has numerous health benefits. However, approximately 70 percent of the North American population is deficient in this essential and quintessential nutrient.

Vitamin D earned its reputation as the sunshine vitamin because our bodies are able to produce it under our skin in the presence of ultraviolet light.

Dr. Zoltan Rona, a physician and specialist in preventative medicine for more than 30 years, has written an exemplary and timely book entitled, “Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin”.

The fact of the matter is, “your bare skin needs to be exposed to direct sunlight for at least fifteen minutes each day to produce enough vitamin D to meet your needs," explains Dr. Rona, so the question is, are you are getting enough Vitamin D?

Dr. Rona’s easy-to-read book on Vitamin D delves into important information, including a complete explanation of the role this vitamin plays in our body and our health.

Confused about how much to take? Worried about toxicity effects? Dr. Rona answers the tough questions people have surrounding vitamin D supplementation as he discusses what type of Vitamin D to take and how much of it to consume.

Backed by science and recent studies, Dr. Rona discusses the many health benefits Vitamin D has to offer.

Here are just some of the topics Dr. Zoltan Rona discusses in relation to Vitamin D:

Inflammation (Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties)

High Blood Pressure (sunlight exposure is linked to lowering blood pressure)

Common Cold & Flu (low blood levels of Vitamin D seems to increase your risk)

Diabetes (prevention may be possible by increasing blood levels of Vitamin D)

Insomnia (Dr. Rona recommends anyone with sleep problems to get their blood levels for Vitamin D checked)

Migraines (a Vitamin D deficiency is common in migraine sufferers)

This book is easy to read and understand; it makes for a perfect reference guide or great gift for any friend. Once you read this book, you’ll be more aware and more informed about Vitamin D and what you need to maintain optimal health.

I had the chance to sit down with Dr. Rona and asked him some questions on this important vitamin:

Naturally Savvy Question (Andrea): You mention in the book that we should avoid toxic sunscreens*. I agree as many of the conventional sunscreens available on the market contain harsh chemicals. Can you tell me what your ideal 'sun protocol' would be for those of us who want to protect our skin from the damage of the sun?

Dr. Zoltan Rona: I would recommend using safer, natural sunscreen containing either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide at the beginning of your sun exposure and build yourself up gradually in the time you spend out in the sunshine. You can start with maybe 5 – 10 minutes a day and gradually increase by 5 minutes a day. As your skin becomes accustomed to the sun's rays you can use less sunscreen as time goes on. You don't want to get burned so SFP protective clothing is another great alternative.

*Editor's Note: During the interview I introduced Dr. Rona to some Naturally Savvy Approved sunscreen brands he wasn't aware of. If you have any suggestions for non-toxic, safe sunscreens, please email me at andrea (at) naturallysavvy (dot) com.

Naturally Savvy Question (Andrea): What would recommend for people who get burned by accident?

Dr. Zoltan Rona: Aloe Vera – both internally and externally – and antioxidants such as vitamin E, selenium, vitamin C and zinc (no more than 50mg/day).

Naturally Savvy Question (Andrea): Can mega dosing help to reverse already damaged skin cells?

Dr. Zoltan Rona: Yes. I would recommend doing it with a professional health care provider as they will take your blood test every three months and make sure your levels are optimal. Also, do not take calcium when you are mega dosing (more than 40,000 IU's a day).

Naturally Savvy Question (Andrea): Some of my colleagues have a few questions for you. They are:

Andrea R: If sun exposure doesn't cause skin cancer, then how come in Australia, there the ozone is thin, the incidents of skin cancer is high?

Dr. Zoltan Rona: What kind of skin cancer? Not Melanoma. UVA radiation from sun exposure can cause other types of skin cancers, but Melanoma is not one of them.

EmilyP: Is there a connection between acne and vitamin D? I started supplementing with vitamin D and found my skin cleared up.

Dr. Zoltan Rona: Yes there is. Research found that those who suffered from acne, have lower levels of vitamin D than those who didn't. Supplementing with vitamin D can help to eliminate acne because vitamin D causes the body to manufacture a protein that acts like an antibiotic that can kill off the bugs on the skin causing acne.

Lfahay: Dr. Rona, do you feel sunscreen is overrated?

Dr. Zoltan Rona: Yes and no. Certain people need to wear sunscreen such as an Albino or someone with fair/pale skin. People with darker complexions will get natural protection from the harmful UVA rays that burn the skin. If you approach sun exposure on a gradual basis, it's unlikely your skin will ever burn and sunscreen may just be a waste of money for you.

Naturally Savvy Question (Andrea): Thank you Dr. Rona. The book is very informative and I was able to get through it in two days. I have already recommendedyour book to many of my friends and I will definitely keep this book on my night table as a reference guide.

Dr. Zoltan Rona: My thanks to you too for all the great work you do in enlightening people on health.

Naturally Savvy Question (Andrea): To read more or to purchase the book, Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin

Plastic is all around us and is practically unavoidable. Though there are known dangers to human and animal health, and especially to the environment, the efforts being made to reduce plastic use are not substantial. While measures are being taken to decrease human exposure to the industrial chemical, Bisphenol A (BPA), Beth Terry, author of "Plastic-Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too" warns us that BPA is not the only chemical in plastic we should be avoiding.

NS: What inspired you to write your book?

BT: Before I started my blog, I didn’t know much about the pollution caused by plastic. I would double plastic bags at the grocery store, drank bottled water, ate frozen dinners, and led a life of convenience. One night I stumbled across an article on the plastic pollution in the ocean and saw a picture of an albatross chick filled with plastic. I am such an animal lover, and to think that my life could be harming animals like this shocked me. I sat and cried for a few minutes, and then thought, I have to do something. So I decided to see what my plastic footprint was. I set up a bag under my kitchen table to see how much I accumulated. I also wanted to see if I could not use plastic or bring any home.

I created a blog called Fake Plastic Fish (but Google thought I was selling aquarium supplies) but later changed it to My Plastic-Free Life.

After three years, I had accumulated so much information on my blog about plastic and plastic-free alternatives, I had to organize it better. I wanted to reach people who don’t read blogs so I decided to put it into a book format.

NS: Is there any safe plastic?

BT: The issue is, it is impossible to know if any plastic is safe. In addition to the problems we know about, plastics can contain thousands of possible additives to affect the hardness, or softness, or slippery-ness, and manufacturers don’t disclose what their recipes are.

The number on the container tells you what type of plastic it is, but it doesn’t tell you what else has been added to the plastic. If you don’t know what’s in it, you can’t tell what will leach out of it. The additives are not bound to the polymer, and when the plastic is subject to stress (light, heat) it can leach.

Some BPA-free bottles were tested and were found to have some of the same hormone-disrupting chemicals as BPA, so the alternatives are not necessarily safe either.

When people ask me which plastics are safe, I say, “I don’t know that any plastics are safe if I don’t know what’s in them.”

We know that #3 PVC is very toxic. It contains phthalates and is often stabilized with heavy metals (lead, cadmium), and it creates dioxins when it burns.

We also know that polycarbonate, #7 (hard clear plastic) generally contains BPA.

Some studies have shown #1 PET leaching phthalates as well. Even #2 and #4 will leach.

Any plastic can leach. It depends on what additives have been added to it.

During research on #5, the plastic wasn’t even being tested. The researchers were using plastic test tubes, which were thought not to leach. They tested the test tubes and realized they were affecting their experiments.

Many companies, even green companies, think about plastic last. It isn’t a priority.

NS: Why are plastic bags taboo? Are they worse than other plastic products?

BT: It’s because of their form. They’re lightweight and blow away easily. This is hazardous to marine animals, especially if you live in coastal areas. We need to keep them out of the ocean. They resemble jellyfish, which sea turtles eat. The other thing about plastic bags is that there’s an easy alternative. Bring your own bags to the store. Plastic bags are a good first step. Paper bags have a big environmental impact as well, so they should be charged for, too.

NS: Should we be buying recycled toilet paper?

BT: Recycled toilet paper is problematic. Trace amounts of BPA were found in recycled toilet paper. How did it get into toilet paper? From receipts tossed into recycling bins. Thermal receipt paper should not go into recycle bins! It is coated with BPA in powder form, which leaches readily. This is how it ends up in recycled toilet paper.

When you handle a paper receipt, BPA ends up on your hands. Some receipt paper-makers are switching to Bisphenol S (BPS). Unfortunately, BPS is about as hazardous as BPA, but companies can say that their products are BPA-free. It’s still absorbed through your skin.

Our money is contaminated with BPA, too, because cashiers and people are frequently touching it along with their receipts.

NS: Is recycling a good solution?

BT: Plastic recycling is the last resort. It isn't the solution. There are cities whose recycling systems allow every type of plastic to be included and people have the wrong idea that all plastic products are being recycled. That’s not true. The non-recyclable items are separated and landfilled(or worse). People are confused about which plastics are recyclable, and it isn’t translating into responsible purchasing decisions.

Every area is different. Research exactly what your neighborhood allows or doesn’t allowfor recycling. Take care to include only plastic items that can be recycled in your recycling bins. And when you must buy a plastic product, or one that’s wrapped in plastic, choose those plastics that are the most readily recyclable where you live.

Another issue is that the majority of recyclables in North America are shipped to China (who’s environmental standards are not as good as ours). The transportation itself has an environmental impact. The recycled plastic products are then remade into various plastic items for us to use in North America.

NS: Plastic is of particular concern for parents. Baby bottles, dishes, toys… everything seems to be made from plastic. If BPA is not the only concern, what do you suggest?

BT: The companies Life Without Plastic and Mighty Nest sell stainless steel and glass bottles, dishes, and lunchbox items for kids. Some of the products available on Mighty Nest are made with Duralex, which is 2.5 times stronger than glass.

NS: Can you suggest some ways that we can reduce our use of plastic immediately?

BT: Bring your own glass or stainless steel containers to restaurants if you plan to take home leftovers or when you’re buying take-out. At the deli, ask for your food to be wrapped in paper rather than plastic. Better yet, bring your own container.

Also, rinse plastic food containers before putting them into the recycling bin because the food contaminates the paper products (which are then recycled).

We can support companies who make reusable items. Buy less. Use only what you need. Reuse what you have. Bring your own bottle.

NS: Are you totally plastic-free?

BT: I am not 100% plastic free. Prescription bottles, plastic caps on glass bottles – some plastics are unavoidable. And I choose to have them because they make life livable. I advocate change on a systemic level – it has to be removed from production in the first place. I want people to be mindful of the choices they have and make, and I want them to know their choices make a difference. You don’t have to remove everything. Just be aware. Is the product covered in plastic (or made from it) something that you need in the first place?

To read about some of the plastic-free alternatives we like, read 6 Ways to Make Your Fridge Plastic Free.

In 2007 Beth Terry committed to stop buying any new plastic & she has almost succeeded! For more suggestions on how to avoid plastic in your life and to keep track of Beth's plastic usage, visit her blog.

It was 1998 and I just got engaged. It was nighttime, I was lying in bed, and there I was again, in sheer agony lamenting over my distended belly with tears rolling down my face. I told my fiancé I couldn't continue like this because it was affecting my quality of life. It was right there and then that I promised myself I would find a way to fix my situation.

I had seen doctor after doctor, including specialists, to find out why I couldn't eat anything without experiencing all sorts of problems. I had gone through a series of tests to determine what was wrong with me, but my doctor couldn’t figure out what was causing my symptoms. He told me it was likely I had a mixture of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and some mysterious condition I had made up in my head.

That night in bed I realized I could no longer depend on my doctor to fix what was ailing me and had to take my health into my own hands. I read everything I possibly could on IBS. I quickly learned about its connection to stress, diet and nutrition. For the first time in a long time, I started to have hope that I could solve my digestive issues just by changing the way I ate.

It didn’t take long to start feeling better. Six months, and many courses of probiotics later, I was on the mend. I avoided dairy, and tried every diet plan under the sun to see what felt the best for me. I did Weight Watchers, the Zone diet, Atkins, Fit for Life-I even became a fruitarian for a while. Yup, I was the Diet Plan Queen. Once I learned that our daily diet is our medicine-we take it three times a day, everyday-I cured the stomach issues that had ailed me for so long.

As I started to learn more about our food system and how processed foods contained ingredients that were unhealthy, I started to make waves at my job. I had been working as a Product Manager at a packaged goods company and was now questioning 100-year-old product formulas. I wanted to reformulate product lines to remove the preservatives and artificial additives they contained. But most of all I wanted to help change our society’s broken way of eating.

This was back in 1998 and my ideas didn’t fly. I was ahead of my time…

My desire to change the way we look at food labels inspired me to go back to school to become a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (R.H.N.). The knowledge I acquired at school propelled me forward and ultimately led me to start Naturally Savvy. I like to say it is my life, online.

(The interview above was from 2010 when I was on Good Morning America Health. I talked about Brain Boosting Foods For Kids. It's fun to watch these older interviews as I was pregnant in this one with my now almost eight-year-old daughter!)

When I was growing up, junk food was a hot button issue in our house. My mother outlawed junk food when I was a teenager, because she was trying to maintain a healthy household. My father, on the other hand, was a classic yo-yo dieter. He lived to eat and especially loved his junk food.

Before I became a mom, I vowed never to deprive my children of sweets. But once my kids came along, I suddenly understood where my mother had been coming from.

Twelve years ago, I attended a family gathering with my husband, my then three-year-old son, and 13-month-old daughter. We had just arrived and my son saw a table covered in candy. My immediate maternal reaction was to say “no way” and “absolutely not,” -and point him towards some coloring books.

However, three-year-olds can be rather persistent. And it didn't help that my father, his junk-food-loving grandpa, kept begging me to “let him live a little. Because kids are supposed to eat candy.” So I decided to “let loose” for one night and I let my son indulge in neon green gummy bears, sprinkled chocolate bars, and one very long colorful candy kebab.

As I thought about it, I realized it wasn’t so much the junk food itself I had an issue with, but rather the type of junk food. The junk he was eating was filled with artificial colors, artificial flavors, and ingredients I couldn’t even pronounce!

As a parent, and educator, who lives a healthy lifestyle, I struggle daily with maintaining a balance between allowing my children to “live a little” and staying true to my beliefs.

I learned a long time ago that eliminating junk food completely from my children’s diet wasn’t realistic. Knowing deprivation wasn’t the answer, I set out to find healthier options to the junk food everyone else was eating, and introduced these alternatives to my family. It was my search for healthy junk food that inspired me to write Unjunk Your Junk Food: Healthy Alternatives to Conventional snacks, Label Lessons: Your Guide to a Healthy Shopping Cart, and Label Lessons: Unjunk Your Kid's Lunch Box.

The endless research we do here at Naturally Savvy, along with the writing and publishing, further fuels my passion for this lifestyle.

It is my goal to have Naturally Savvy, Unjunk Your Junk Food and both of our Label Lessons e-books serve as your resources for healthy living.

As with any journey there are trials and tribulations along the way. I’d

love to hear where you are on your healthy living journey and how you

are making a difference in your life and those around you.

When choosing a new carpet for your home you should probably keep a few things in mind, for instance: durability, stain-resistance, color, price, toxins, renewable resources and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you’re like us and pride yourself on keeping a green and toxin-free home, then we recommend opting for a natural wool carpet instead of a synthetic one.

Many conventional carpets, paints, and mattresses contain VOCs. VOCs are carbon compounds with a high vapor pressure and low water solubility, and are usually man-made. VOCs contribute to smog, and to Sick Building Syndrome. Think of it as indoor air pollution. VOCs can cause headaches, nausea and many different health problems. At high concentrations, some VOCs can cause persistent and acute health effects; others are known carcinogens. Not what you would expect to find in your ‘home sweet home’.

I recently moved to a new house and decided to put in carpets instead of flooring for our upstairs bedrooms and basement. After much research, I came across an eco-friendly, VOC-free, carpet company called Nature’s Carpet.

Nature’s Carpet's products are simple yet stylish, and made from 100% wool. They use wool for many reasons:

  1. Sustainability. Sheep’s wool is considered a renewable resource as it contstantly grows back. Carpets made from synthetic fibers contain petroleum byproducts, and petroleum is a non-renewable resource. Wool, on the other hand, renews itself quite rapidly! You can sheer a sheep for their whole life without ever harming them in the process.
  2. Fire Resistance. Wool is naturally fire retardant. It’s why many parents choose wool blend sheets, carpets and curtains for their children’s room.
  3. Durability. Spill water on it or track mud through it, Nature's Carpets are easy to clean and are naturally stain resistant. Wool also keeps its shape and color. It didn't take us long to dirty our Nature's Carpets (my dog Oscar had an accident on the stairs), but with a natural enzyme based carpet cleaner, I sprayed the stain, soaked up the excess liquid with a dry rag and allowed it to air dry. The next day when I checked on it, and it had dried nicely without leaving any marks.
  4. Choice. Nature's Carpet has three lines to choose from, which they refer to as their "green spectrum". Their products range from light green (low toxicity and 100% wool, but it does have some synthetic materials), to dark green (this carpet is undyed, has no chemicals, and has ultra low toxicity). I chose the dark green option for my house because I felt that was the best option for our family. However, it is not a cheap option. If you are budget conscious, then consider their light green line for a classy style, but a little less money.

Nature's Carpets are made from sustainable sources, are biodegradable, chemical free and can literally make you breathe a little easier when you are inside your home.  And with that, Nature’s Carpet receives the Naturally Savvy Seal of Approval.
